When we hear the words “winterize your sprinkler system” or “sprinkler blow out”, it can often be confusing as to what this actually is and why it is important. Every year before the first freeze, blowing out your sprinkler system should be a priority for any and all irrigation systems that are located in a region, Colorado specifically, where the frost levels can extend below the depth of the installed piping. Why is this important? If there is any water left in your sprinkler pipes, they can freeze, expand, and crack your PVC piping. Though these pipes are often flexible and will generally expand under pressure, any leftover water could potentially freeze and rupture these pipes. Freezing water left in the back flow assembly can damage the internal components and may possible crack the brass body. To minimize any risk of damaging your sprinkler system, you will need to winterize your sprinklers. There are a few different methods but the most common and effective one generally tends to be the blowout.
Why Does This Need to Be Done?
Often many may think, “If it’s underground, how can it freeze?” The answer is quite simple. During long freezing weather, the frost can move deeper into the soil. How deep it goes generally depends on how cold it is and how long it says that temperature. After the temperature begins to rise, the soil will gradually thin out. But it is often wondered how deep can the frost truly go? There is no set answer. While most sprinkler systems are buried between 8-12 inches, you can’t necessarily guess how deep the frost can go. There are many different variables that can affect this. If it’s cold for an extended period of time, the frost will go deeper. If the wind constantly blows on one spot, the frost can go deeper as well. It all just varies and no one knows why but this is why it is important to blow out your sprinklers.
Sometimes winterizing your sprinkler system can be confusing and hard. If you want to turn to a professional, look no further. Here at Westside Grounds we pride ourselves in preparing your sprinkler system for our cold Colorado winters and will be more than happy to help you in this process. A lot of people make the ghastly assumption that this is all we do–just mow lawns for money. Although we do offer that service, landscaping is much more than that. The outdoor space that immediately surrounds your property is something that welcomes you home everyday, and is something that says farewell before you leave in the morning, or for a trip. It is how you present your home to the world, and we treat that with much more attention than simply phrasing it as mowing lawns for money.
Your Best Foot Forward
When you invite someone over to your house, the way it looks from the outside is inescapable. There is no hiding a house! There are a number of quotes about first impressions, and judging a book by its cover, but I am sure that you know them all by heart. Whether you believe them or not, it does not matter to the other people in your life who do. If you did not care about those impressions, chances are you probably wouldn’t be on landscaper’s blog! At Westside Grounds, we make it simple for you to have a healthy, vibrant, and well groomed first impression of the place that you spend the bulk of your time.
What is the old adage about a clean house and a clean mind? Well, the same goes for the outside of your home. Knowing that your landscaping is taken care of, is a weight off your shoulder’s. It frees up your time to pursue whatever your heart desires, and that is something much more worth the time you could spend with tasks that we have been doing professionally for over 20 years.
Time is Your Most Valuable Resource
So, then next time you consider a landscaper someone who mows lawns for money, consider the bolstered confidence in the place that you call home, the effects that the uplifted confidence can bring, and the time that they save you. No matter which way you twist it, time is limited, and arguably the most valuable thing anyone can possess. Use yours how you want to, and let us take care of your landscaping.
Spring is in the air, literally! With only 20 days until the 1st day of spring, it’s definitely time to start preparing our lawn. It’s never too early to start planning your spring gardening routine, especially if you plan on managing your lawn yourself. Here area few lawn care tips to keep in mind to do especially before the start of Easter if you want your lawn to be healthy and happy by the start of spring.
Many homeowners think that it’s too cold and wet to effectively and efficiently apply any type of fertilizer but late February is actually the perfect time to start getting your plants the love and nutrition it needs. Using an organic fertilizer is a great way to make sure that your plants stay happy and healthy through the end of winter. By applying a few small amounts of fertilizer over your grass, you’re allowing the roots to fortify itself in prep for nicer weather.
If you currently have any potted plants, now is a good time to remove any old soil and apply some new, healthy soil. Carefully using a trowel, remove about 1″ of soil from each pot and then replace it with new, organic topsoil. The moist winter weather will aid in the soil’s nutrients penetrate into the root system of the plants and get them through the last run of the winter season.
Different evergreens and other heavier growing year round plants will need a good pruning this time of year. Be sure to be harsh with pruning but be sure to leave at least one or two buds for new growth as well. The less old, dead growth you have taking the nutrients from the root system, the better off your plant will be.
If year after year you find yourself pressed for time for your lawn care routine, it may be time to call in the professionals. The earlier in the season that you call, the more options you’ll have when for availability and times for treatment. Now is also the time to check your equipment for any rust and wear-and-tear and make sure to replace them before the season starts to save some money. Don’t forget about your lawn when things turn brown. Late winter is the optimal time to make arrangements for the remainder of the year and leaves better groundwork for you to lay down now so your lawn will be healthier in the long run.
If you’re in a bit of a bind and need some professional lawn care help, contact us today at Westside Grounds Lawn, Inc. and let us make your lawn as healthy as it deserves.

With all those constantly changing aspects to the climate, being able to adjust the game plan is what we have become accustomed with.

No matter your age, doing these things is just plain fun:
Build a fort.
Building a fort is something that just makes life better. (The pictured fort is made from sticks and twigs, but forts can be made from sheets, or boxes, or anything else you have lying around) Building a fort is part make-believe, it fully opens your creative license and is perhaps the absolute best place to sleep (until your dog rips the whole creation to the ground: ]. Enter best lawn activity # two…
Chase your Dog!
After your dog rips your fort down, or maybe you just feel like it, give chase. At first, you may be red-eyed with visions of never having to pay for its food ever again, but as the chase proceeds, and you see the joy of that mutt for finally getting you to play along in his favorite game, your heart slowly starts to melt. At the very least, you get your heart pumping and develop lower leg stabilizing muscles. Or, maybe you just get tuckered out, fall over, and get your face covered in slobber. Time for a wash up!
Water Gun Fight!
Whether you have balloons filled with water, a super soaker, or just a bucket and a hose, watering the lawn has never been this much fun. There are few activities that contain such strategy and exhilaration with such small consequence as a water battle. Think of the family team building that occurs with such cooperation! Who cares if the intention is semi-sinister? Drenching the rest of your friends and family is a hoot!
This one is much more tame, but blowing those floating, shiny, iridescent spheres is never boring. They move with the breezes! And when they pop…they just disappear! For crying out loud! That’s just awesome.
Dig a bomb shelter!
I don’t know why this made the list. In all honesty, I think I just needed to put a fifth item on the list and this is the first thing that popped into my head. I challenge you to start, though. Just grab a shovel (of course call 811 first! Call before you dig!) and get after it. If you last more than a few hours, I applaud you. Now you have a mess, though, and you probably need us to come fix your lawn. Feel free to just give us a call!
Alright, bam! There it is. The best things to do in your lawn are childish or crazy. (Did I just stumble upon a great rule to life?…) Have fun!
April is typically the time when outdoor chores rev up again. The ice has been chipped away, the snow has melted, and it is time to stretch your outside legs again! To make your life easier, here are four simple checklists for April lawn care tips that set your lawn on track for a great summer.
First off, get your tools ready.
- If you have an electric lawn mower, make sure the blade is sharp (if the blade is not sharp it will be apparent). If the blade is dull, make sure the cord is unplugged or the battery is disconnected. Then, remove the blade, and sharpen it.
- If you have a gasoline lawn mower or trimmer, there are some important steps to take to ensure that it lasts through the rigors of a summer of lawn upkeep.
- Remove the spark plug. This disables the engine and makes it a little safer for work. Use a piece of sand paper to clean the spark plug (This helps for quicker starts). If the plug seems beyond hope, replace it.
- Empty the gas. If it has been left in the tank all winter, the chances are it is stale and that can cause rust in your carburetor.
- Check the sharpness of the blade. If it is dull, remove the blade and use a grinder to sharpen it.
- Check the oil. You lawnmower will most likely need an oil change, but it is not necessary on smaller, two-cycle engines.
- If there is an air-filter, now is a great time to change it.
- Clean off all the built-up grass and debris on the underside of the machines.
- If you have a manual/push lawnmower, make sure all the blades are sharp, and you are ready!
- For all the other tools necessary for your lawn work, just make sure you know where they all are located, and that they are still operational. Most hand-held tools are simple. So, they do not need a lot of maintenance.
Bring More Airflow to Your Lawn
Aerating your lawn is one of the most important April lawn care tips. Essentially, the machines used to aerate a lawn poke holes in the ground. That process allows more airflow, as well as moisture, to reach the roots which helps promote healthy growth. Getting this done in the spring is an important step to ensuring the healthiest lawn possible all through the summer.
Cutting the Grass
Mowing your lawn is another important April-specific lawn care tip. Cutting it too short is damaging. As a general guideline, cut the top third off the length of the grass. That means that you must keep regularly cutting the grass to ensure a healthy length, and still remove the top third of the blades of grass.
Getting the right irrigation starts in April. There are plenty of options when irrigating your lawn and when looking at all the options, it is important to know the benefits. Taking the familiar hose and sprinkler approach is most easily accessible, but it also uses the most water, and takes the largest daily time commitment.
Installing an underground sprinkler system is a hefty investment, it can use quite a lot of water through evaporation, but is a great way to automate your irrigation. Look for the water -saving sprinkler options if you choose to go this route.
For the water needs of your garden, using drip tube irrigation is the most water-efficient, and time conserving option. Typically, this option is more specific to the needs of your garden, or other landscaping, than your lawn. Mowing over exposed tubing can cause a lot of problems.
Don’t let your April lawn care get you down. Refer to this checklist, and be well on your way to enjoying a great lawn this summer. If these chores seem like they will be too demanding for your schedule, or if it is just not one of your priorities, give us a call! Our lawn care professionals are more than happy to come and take care of it for you.
In the winter, we see that our grass stops growing, due to the extreme cold and snow, but what most people do not know is that lawn care should not quit just because it is winter. There are several things that you should do in the winter to take care of your lawn.
It is important that you make sure there is no debris hanging around the yard. In Denver, it snows then thaws, then snows again and if you are not keeping your lawn clear of all of this junk, then you are putting your lawn at risk. These things can smother the grass, create disease conditions and invite other pests to damage your lawn.
Excessively long grass can also smother itself just like the debris in the grass, so make sure you lower the height of your mower by a notch or two before the winter months. However, make sure the grass is not cut too short because you do not want to expose the dirt to extreme conditions.
During the winter, dormant grass can withstand moderate foot traffic, but you need to be careful and make sure their is not too much traffic that it causes a worn down path in the grass. If this happens, it will be harder to get this section of the grass to green up during the spring months.
Make sure throughout the winter that you are monitoring weather conditions. Your grass is made to withstand extreme conditions, but there are certain conditions that can be harmful in the long term. For example, it might be a good idea to chip away a little exposed ice from the grass if you know a winter storm or deep freeze is coming.
Unfortunately, winter is a very unpredictable season and could be very damaging to your lawn if you are not taking the correct steps to protect it. So, next time you are worried about your lawn, make sure you are following these instructions to keep your turf safe. App developers are coming out with more and more complex apps. There are a lot of applications for the snow season. I am going to share my top 5 weather apps and explain what cool features they have to offer, so you can more easily get ready for a snow storm that is coming your way! Enjoy!
1. Living Earth
- This is a very unique application. The way it is set up is much different than any other smart phone application. It gives you a globe and you can choose what you want to investigate, whether it is temperature, humidity and much more. It is not just restricted to one city; you can compare your weather to what is happening around the world. It also doubles as a clock, so you can see what time it is in different parts of the country as well.
2. MyRadar Weather Radar
- This application shows the radar in a specific country and/or state. It is great because you can tell if a snow storm is coming. The great part about this app is that you can also look at what the weather is going to look like for the next 7 days. Also, if a huge storm is coming your way, you can share a radar image to a social media platform and talk about how big a storm is going to be to let others know what is coming.
3. Ski and Snow Report
- This application is more for fun. If you are a skier or a snowboarder, you can see which mountain has gotten the most snow and decide where you want to ski based on that. This app helps you prepare for the place that has the best amount of snow. I have had this application for years and it has never steered me wrong!
4. The Weather Channel
- I have also used this application for years. I like it a lot because it shows temperature, but not just for one day. You can look at the temperature many different ways. You can look at current temperature, a 36 hour temperature or a 10 day forecast, as well as hourly. You can also look at a map to determine the radar and see what is coming your way. It has helped plan many trips around snow storms. Since I used to live in Steamboat, I always had to make sure the conditions were right to travel so I did not get myself into an awful snowstorm.
- This application is a lot like The Weather Channel app, but there are a few things that Accuweather does differently. They have a dial that tells you the speed of the wind. The best part of this app is that there is a section that tells you what the conditions are good for. It tells you what sports are good for the day, what outdoor activities are good for the weather and information about your health needs for the day.
All of these application will prepare you for a snow storm. Whether is for skiing or being prepared for a big snow storm. If you do find yourself having a huge snowstorm, call Westside Grounds Lawn Services for snow removal in Denver and other Front Range areas.
If you have any other application you would recommend, please feel free to comment!
