The Basics of Lawn Care

Lawn care is one of the most important aspects of lawn maintenance. Lawns are integral to every lawn owner’s property and often represent a huge investment in time and money.

Who doesn’t want a lawn that is green and weed-free?

Going the extra mile to get proper lawn care services can save homeowners from costly lawn repairs later on down the road. It can be difficult to keep your lawn looking its best, but there are plenty of lawn care basics that you should know.

Let’s talk about how you can take proper care of your lawn.

lawn care basics

Lawn Care and Maintenance

Lawn care is often disregarded by homeowners who mostly think a lawn is just a way for your house to look great. Maintaining your lawn doesn’t mean that you want your house to look nice, but it does show others what kind of homeowner you are, depending on how you care for it.

How do you keep a lawn that is healthy and green even if you have the right soil and grass?

Watering the Lawn

Simple watering is all that’s needed. The general rule is to water heavily, when the lawn really needs it, rather than watering lightly more frequently. Lightly watering the leaves with water won’t have much effect on the soil. Water the plant enough so that the roots grow deep into the ground, about six inches (20 cms). Usually, water should be applied to the soil too just above the surface of the ground (2.5 cm). Depending on the soil type, this could vary.

How Often Should You Water Your Lawn?

Once the grass in your lawn has dried out, water it immediately. Green becomes a soft bluish grey, and the bounce diminishes. Water the grass if it does not spring back within a few seconds after you step on it. Water the lawn early in the morning; your lawn won’t dry out as fast as in the afternoon, and the water will cool you down as the temperatures rise.

Lawn Fertilization

We always pride ourselves on using the best possible fertilization methods, and that’s why we choose to use granular fertilizers. This type of fertilizer has a timing element which adds an effectiveness that liquid fertilizers simply cannot. This product lasts anywhere from one to six weeks depending on your lawn care needs. We use slow- and fast-release formulas in-tandem which include a perfectly balanced mixture of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.

Lawn Mowing

Grass plants’ roots are less strained when they are mowed. The above-ground growth of a large culm requires more water and nutrients than the below-ground growth. With a smaller culm, the grass roots have an easier time supporting the plant. The grass is also encouraged to grow by mowing. Plants need new leaves to absorb sunlight when blades cut down their leaves. As a result, your lawn will be heavier, thicker, and more resistant to weeds.

Take a chore off of your plate by scheduling weekly Denver lawn mowing of your entire lawn and turf perimeter. At Westside Grounds we maintain the highest standard of service by using only the best lawn mowing equipment, which we rigorously maintain to ensure that they are always sharpened and tuned. How Often Should You Mow Your Lawn?

You should mow your lawn based on the season. During the growing season, mowing should be done more frequently. A rule of thumb is to only trim the grass by a third at a time – this affects the grass’ ability to photosynthesize suddenly. Cutting the grass too short is a common mowing mistake. Warm-season grasses do best if they are kept at 2 to 2.5 inches (5 to 6.5 cm) high. Cool-season grasses do best if they’re kept at 3 inches (7.5 cm) high or higher.

How often should you mow your Denver Lawn

Variably mow at different heights during the year may be a good idea. Fall, winter, and spring are the best times to mow because it’s still cool and there is plenty of water available. The grass should grow longer during the summer. Cooling the soil will be made easier by the shade.

Bagging of Clippings

Unless you are worried that grass clipping will be tracked inside your home, the lawn care and maintenance experts at Westside Grounds lawn recommend that you leave grass clipping on the surface of your lawn after mowing. Bagging grass mean that all of the basic nutrients to your grasses health are unable to be recycled back into the soil. Your lawn’s optimum nutrient levels are achieved only by allowing the grass shoots to be inserted back into your turf.

Weed Control

Keeping a lawn healthy requires continuous weed control, but it shouldn’t take long once it is established. The grass itself will crowd out most weeds when grown properly, especially modern mixtures. If weeds are abundant, it might be a sign that your lawn is not as strong as it should be. It’s possible that your lawn lacks proper soil, is overwatered, or you may be cutting it too short.

How Can You Manage Weed Growth?

Obviously, even a healthy lawn will have weeds on it. It’s not a big deal for the most part. Weeds are common on lawns, but in small amounts, they don’t do much damage. You can remove weeds that affect the appearance of the lawn by pulling them up. You may need to spray individual weeds with a low-toxicity herbicide if you have a large weed problem. Unless there are weeds all over the lawn, do not spray it.

Disease & Fungus Control

Over the years at Westside Grounds Lawn we have taken on a wide variety of lawn concerns including diseased and fungus infested lawns.

Fungi usually cause diseased lawns by feeding on the grass. A healthy lawn can resist fungi well, but it can become ill sometimes. Fungicides are available at most garden centers for fighting persistent or widespread fungi.

It’s up to you how complicated you want to make lawn maintenance. Those who want their own backyard golf course, devote many hours each week to their lawn maintenance. For something that covers the ground, you could plant native grasses that do remarkably well.

These kinds of issues can be observed if your lawn has patches or spots of dead or damaged grass. If you see issues like this it is best to jump on the problem early by calling the Denver lawn care and maintenance professionals at Westside Grounds. Our trained and highly skilled technicians will evaluate your lawn and take the necessary measures to rid it of all disease and fungus issues.

Insect Control

Weed control and insect control go hand in hand. It shouldn’t be a problem if your lawn is healthy. While insects will inhabit your lawn, the grass won’t suffer much damage from their presence.

Some grass may be destroyed by bugs from time to time. Using insecticides or bacteria will help you control infestations. Only use insecticides meant for killing harmful insects. Keeping spiders and ants around can be beneficial to your lawn since they prey on pests.

The Denver lawn care and maintenance experts at Westside Grounds Lawn are highly skilled insect control experts and are ready to handle all your insect control issues.
